RIYAZ UDDIN

A third-generation miniature artist, Riyaz Uddin began painting at the age of thirteen, working across Rajasthani, Mughal and Deccani miniature traditions. His practice is grounded in close attention to line, pigment and ornament, using natural colours and gold to carry these historic techniques into contemporary objects and surfaces.

Miniature Handpainted Tray

Riyaz Uddin turns to Bernard Boutet de Monvel’s portrait of Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II, reinterpreting the celebrated image hand-painted across the surface of this tray. Painted in 1929, the portrait captures the Maharaja within the visual language of Art Deco, reflecting a period of exchange between India and Europe. The tray carries this meeting of portraiture, design and royal patronage into a contemporary object.
